Hangi Memoir by Caleb Mck
The ash flickered in the sky with the little red embers. The steam filtered the sky into a greyish colour. The smoke whispered past my face like a leaf blower.I looked at the steam as it evaporated into the misty light fog.The sticks burst into burning red flames. The river stones exploded with steam, the steam flew into the misty sky.The heat blew into everyone faces and boiled them into hot red soup. The embers glowed like Matariki stars in the dawn light.
The tough men pulled the hot train track rails and the river stones into the deep black blank hole. The men's faces dripped bucket loads of sweat as they lifted the crates of food into the hole. The cabbage leaves leaked water like the mens faces.
I glared into the hangi. My eyes fluttered from the ash. The smoke rose. The sun fell through. The embers flickered and flared like the Matariki stars times ten. As the rags dived onto the pit they sizzled until they looked like an old prune.
As I walked away I wondered how long the train tracks and the river stones would last.
As I walked away I wondered how long the train tracks and the river stones would last.
The hāngi memoir by Peter
As I walked I could see red hot stones being pulled into the pit.
I could smell the food it smelled like chicken, meat and smoke.
I could see the ash floating above me like a dragon fly hovering.
I could see the men working hard at jerking the stones in with big metal rods.
First they put in the tray full of meat. Then the chicken next the potatoes. They put sacks soaked in water then sheets and last of all dirt to keep the heat.
I was thinking what will it taste like as I left the site.

The Hangi
The Hangi
by Grace
I stared at the grey shapeless smoke, as it hovered in the air, thicker than fog and mist and then down at the smoking flaming pit.
The strong men were shovelling fiery rocks and then sending them into the empty smouldering pit. Once that was done a barrel of icy water was drizzled onto the hangi, smoke flew in the air and if I thought the smoke was thick before I was very wrong. We were surrounded with the swirling , muggy black smoke, I heard metal clanging against metal as it was settled into the pit.
I coughed in frustration as the smoke was still very dense. I looked over my shoulder and gasped at the gum tree in the sand pit. The sun light was filtering through the branches and I realised the smoke was lifting.
I wondered if every hangi was as amazing as this, I guess not.

My Birthday Story
“Leap here we come!” I shouted quietly. It was my birthday today and we were to leap with Jade. We arrived at leap and went in. There were lots and lots of trampolines, there was an air bag a dodge ball even a basket ball area. Mum had checked us in earlier on and got our wristbands. We waited a while until two o’clock, then my cousins arrived, they were just in time to hear the rules.
“OK everyone listen up please!”One of the staff members said. “No pushing no shoes and last but not least HAVE FUN!”
We ran like a herd elephants onto the trampolines trying to get past.We bounced and had a game of dodge ball for about two hours, then time was up, we had to leave
We got in the car and I said to Jade
“ That will be an experience I will never forget !”

Snow description by Kaia
Snowballs whizzing through the air and exploding on Oscar's rake.
Snowballs darting out of nowhere, slapping me on the back.
Snowballs flying back and forth, landing with a plop.
Grace hurling snowballs at Oscar in a frenzy.
Snowmen staring at me, cold and lifeless.
Snowmen falling apart,
melting as it gets warmer.

The Lamborghini Ride.
"Are you ready?''
I take a deep, deep breath and say yes. All I hear is just the powerful V12 engine at work moving us along at around 200 kilometres per hour!
"I didn't even get to see 100 kilometres per hour!"I thought to myself as we rush into the trees.
I look to my left and if the world suddenly had turned to slow motion, I saw three aliens and a ufo sitting on the hill in the corner of my eye. I chuckled to myself.
Soon we were going over the bridge and back down it in a flash! I was thrilled that I came out of that end bridge corner alive.
I kind of had a little flashback to when the Highlands 101 was happening. A person on a motorbike was doing a wheelie burnout where we were rushing past.
All I could imagine was just that it was over so quickly, but it was still a lot of fun!

The Earthquake
The hall filled with terrified screams. My heart was going a mile a minute. I started to panic. Children ran around screaming and hiding under chairs. I looked at everyone's terrified faces and heard their shrill screams around me. My body froze in fear.
" EARTHQUAKE DROP COVER HOLD!" yelled Victoria.
A few girls did what she said but the others were frozen in fear, including me. I looked back at my guitar. We were in the hall and I had just finished my lesson as the earthquake struck. I was terrified as the ground shook under my feet. I kept my balance but it seemed like forever. It stopped finally. A few more children walked in.
"Did you feel that!?"
We yelled.
"Feel what?"
They asked.
I sighed as they tried to explain what happened. I guess not then.

Autumn poem by Emma
Dancing, floating leaves flittering to the grass,
the ground of many colours,
orange, yellow and brown
leaves falling to the ground,
like a ballerina twirling round and round.
red like blood,
yellow like sun,
brown like dirt
and orange like a carrot
never blue like sea
or purple like a plum.
the ground of many colours,
orange, yellow and brown
leaves falling to the ground,
like a ballerina twirling round and round.
red like blood,
yellow like sun,
brown like dirt

The Snow Day
"Hannah,! Wake up! It's an emergancy!!"
I felt an icy chill through my spine as she grabbed me.
"No, it's a prank"
I thought. Her icy fingers gripped my wrist tightly as I was dragged out of bed.
"It's a prank," I kept thinking " I know it is."
At least that's what I thought, until she opened the curtain. I gasped. I cupped my hands over my mouth. I froze. I stared out into the endless white snow. It looked like a giant teddy bear had been ripped apart and the stuffing was spread everywhere, like a white abyss.

Emma's snow memoir
The snow was falling harder than ever, hitting my eyes making them sting. I could hear the motorbike pulling the wool bale bag I was sitting on. Snow was up my gloves making my hands freeze. "Are you still on Emma?" Dad yelled.
I could barely get out a word because I was frozen. "Am I on?" I asked myself.
I could still feel the bag so I decided that I was fighting the snow and holding on tightly so that means I'm still on. "Yep!" I exclaimed surprised to still be sitting on. The bag was slipping and sliding across the hill.
Later Dad drove me back up to the house. I took off my waterproof clothes and went inside. "Oh no," I thought "There's still a power cut."

Autumn leaves by Casey A
Leaves dancing to the ground.
Gently floating in the air.
Crunching, scrunching and breaking leaves.
Blending colours.
Red, green, brown and orange leaves everywhere.
Leaves rustling,
Trying to hold on.
Gently floating in the air.
Crunching, scrunching and breaking leaves.
Blending colours.
Red, green, brown and orange leaves everywhere.
Leaves rustling,
Trying to hold on.

Autumn Leaves Fall
By Ben McGechan
In Autumn the leaves fall,
swaying to the beat of the wind.
The flaming leaves in Arrowtown
will come out
in the middle of Winter
When Spring comes
the deciduous trees will smile
as the new coat of green leaves
will arrive.
The Earthquake
I gulped. I turned as white as a sheet. My legs were as wobbly as jelly.
"Get under the table everyone! yelled Mrs Lees. I darted under the nearest table and clung to the table leg like a limpet clings to a rock, but the earthquake kept on shaking the earth like an angry giant shakes his club.
I could see everyone huddled together under tables, most of them looked as pale and as scared as me. I felt sick, nauseous and my heart was going "boom boom" as it thumped away in my
chest. I could hear a slight rumble and the frightened murmurs of the people around
me.
The earthquake stopped suddenly and everyone allowed themselves a moment
The earthquake stopped suddenly and everyone allowed themselves a moment
to breathe. We slowly crawled out from under the tables.
Even though the earthquake had stopped I still felt sick.

Laid Down
Laid Down
By Ben McGechan
Soldiers falling like shot ducks
once alive now in a endless sleep many pray
but don’t get their wish
and are laid down to rest
now we remember them
for what they did for our country

Weekly Spelling
The children in Room 11 are beginning to challenge themselves with different ways of learning their Spelling. There was some fabulous work this week.
Emma made a google drawing. She has made gigantic steps using this choice for her learning.
Casey B showed the expert skills he has by designing a spelling poster in google drawings.
